This blog is being used for a book we'll be giving to Dave the night of the party. This book will be a collection of well wishes, stories, tributes, etc from all his friends, former players, coaches. It's very simple - like signing a yearbook. You can be as creative or simple as you want. Don't be left out. If you want to be in Dave's yearbook, you need to post your note by MAY 14th! Just email patrickdugg@gmail.com with your contribution and we'll post it for you.

Bob Donahue (played on Dave’s first team 1980-83)

Dave,

What’s hard to believe is that it’s been 30 years since you first pulled up to the parking lot of Osborn Hill school in your green Dodge Dart and introduced yourself as the new coach of St. Thomas basketball. What’s not hard to believe, however, is that after all these years so many former players, parents, fellow coach’s and friends have come together to honor you for your passionate coaching, tireless dedication, prudent guidance and loyal friendship.

In between then and now there have been many great memories, both on the court and off: the practices in the dark at Christ the King, the year end team dinners at Luigi’s, the rides home from practice you would give us whenever we asked (even though our parents could have easily picked us up), the trips we would make before school to see you at Sherman Green Deli to get a doughnut or hot chocolate (on the house!), and, of course, the games.

Back in the early days, there were more losses than wins. Regardless of the final score, however, you always taught us to play the game the right way, respect our opponent (except #6 from St. Mary’s – he was “bush”), and above all else, have fun. I never played organized basketball after St. Thomas and I never felt like I missed out on anything because I knew no other team experience could compare to the three years I played for you. Now, as my own kids begin to play organized sports, I teach them some of the lessons you taught us, and I hope that someday they will be fortunate enough to play for their own Dave.

A lot has changed in the past 30 years. It’s great to know that the one constant over that time has been your presence on the sidelines for St. Thomas. Congratulations Dave – and thank you! To quote Neil Young, “long may you run….”

Best always,

Bob Donahue
