Kath and Tam

Sully,

Tam and I do not know you in a “coaching” capacity, but I am sure the same qualities you display as a husband and a father follow you onto the court. You are a soft spoken, kind man who works hard and loves his family. Your children are kind and wonderful and reflect the values you have instilled in them in all they do.

Congrats on 30 years of coaching and here’s to many more!

Love,

Kath and Tam

Ward Byrne, and family

Not so much when we were young but when we’re older, we do try to make a positive impact on our world.

Most of us are called to coaching because of our kids - “please help us out, we need a coach” - is a common refrain around town.

Dave began before most, volunteering to coach before he even had kids.

He is a good man, who happens to love basketball.

Our kids, our school, our town, and our world are all the better for it.

Because of Dave.

Most importantly by the examples he sets, how he conducts himself, and by what he teaches.

Not just the basketball skills (he did that better than most) but by the other skills that we don’t realized we learned until after they come in to play in our own lives.

Integrity, perseverance, friendship.

It is an honor knowing him.

Dave,

St. Thomas basketball was such a big part of my youth and we all learned so much from you about life as well as basketball. Playing on those great teams was so much fun and the New England Championship adventures are still talked about by the guys from those teams.

St. Thomas basketball is what it is because of you Dave and everyone who has played for you would be quick to agree. Thank you so much for all that you have done.

Dave

You are truly one of the most humble and selfless individuals that Maureen, Colin and I have ever met. Your devotion to St Thomas and the boys in the basketball program has been remarkable. Colin enjoyed playing for you and I enjoyed my 2 years of coaching with you. As a further testament to your character, you continued to be devoted to and remained in contact with many of your players, even after they left St Thomas. I know Colin was always appreciative of the fact that you attended many of his high school games and often waited to speak with him after the game.

But most importantly you were always the epitome of sportsmanship, regardless of the circumstances. You coached and mentored each and every player in the same manner, regardless of the player’s skill level. You have provided all of your players and me with many valuable memories, lessons and life experiences, for which we will all always be grateful.

Thanks for everything.

Patrick Gutierrez

Mr. Sullivan,

Although I was unable to have you as my coach at St. Thomas, you have always been my biggest supporter and have always inspired me to do my best. From my years at St. Thomas and now throughout my high school career, you have always given me words of encouragement as well as great advice during and after games. We have all benefited from your extensive knowledge of basketball in the 30 years you've coached.

Sincerely,
Patrick Gutierrez

The Duggans

Dear Dave,

This is just a quick basketball time out to congratulate you on 30 great years of coaching at St. Thomas and best wishes as you continue coaching at St. Thomas, high school, or wherever you choose.

Our friendship only goes back a couple of years having been your “assistant” on a rag tag spring league Shehan Center team (which you treated with the same energy, skill, and enthusiasm as one of your New England championship teams) and through our numerous conversations (and your counseling) on all things St. Thomas basketball. In this short time, I’ve witnessed the same genuine good spirit and gifted skills that so many others have written about.

Wishing you nothing but the best…

The Duggans (Pat, Maureen, Conor, Kara, and Lizzie)

Joe & Max Wright

Dave,

Thanks for being about the kids first. They learned about the game, competition and teamwork. You built their confidence and helped them become men.

I know you were not overpaid for your efforts!

Thanks for everything you have done and will do.

Best Regards,

Joe & Max Wright

Theresa Bartovic

Dear Sully,

Since I have known you basketball, in particular St. Thomas basketball has been important to you. Your dedication to each team that you have coached is genuine and something that I admire about you. I can still remember the first time that I watched Riley for you, it was the New England's in Boston. You, Beth and the kids would call to check in on the dog and give me a tournament update. You also brought me back a tournament t-shirt that I still proudly wear. I hope that you have a wonderful night down memory lane. Here is to health and happiness and more basketball memories!

Love,

Beth Sullivan

Sul,

One of our first dates was a tournament at Assumption in Westport (1987). You picked me up at the train station on a Friday night and said your team was playing St. Pius. I agreed to go to the game-I thought it was admirable that you had no agenda (except to win!) and just coached for the sake of coaching. It was a fantastic and intense game (I confess I don't remember who won but know that you do and you'll tell me after you read this). You were cool as a cucumber, handling yourself and your team with dignity and grace; I was really impressed. After that, basketball was a big part of our dating experience. You could say we gave new meaning to the term "courting."

Your passion for coaching and teaching the game are admirable attributes. You are fair and you are an advocate for your team.

I remember during a final CYO Tournament game in Waterbury, the head guy stipulated that your team wear black t. shirts (in the final game) under their uniforms (unis were black and white then). Your team only had white t.shirts. You sent your brother Greg and your sister Terry out into the town of Waterbury and they came back with 15 black t.shirts. You kept everyone calm and you kept your own head clear. I think you lost that game by 1 to an annoying Boston team who was chest bumping and touching a "Play like a Champion" sign. (You'll correct me if I'm wrong I know)

I think one of your proudest moments was at the St. Mary's Tournament in the early '90's. A Sportsmanship award was always given to a deserving player on a team. That year the Sportsmanship Award was given to your entire team! Sportsmanship was something you built your teams on.

I know that you feel privileged to have coached for so many years. I also know that you will always be involved in coaching on some level; you're too good at it not to be.

We Love You,

Seach, Lindsey and Jake

Dave,

Having 3 daughters I never had the opportunity to coach with you or have a child play for you. However I usually had a team that practiced before or after yours (by the way it never bothered me that you took an extra 5 minutes). I also had the opportunity to watch many of the boys' games. It was obvious that you taught more than just basketball; you taught life lessons. I am sure everyone you coached has become a better person because of you.

Congratulations on a great coaching career at St. Thomas. All the best to you, Beth, Lindsey and Jake.

The O'Briens

Dave Sullivan is ST.Thomas basketball. Many players and coaches have come and gone over the past 30 years at ST.Thomas but the one constant has always been Dave. His passion for ST. Thomas basketball is unique. His feelings for his players are genuine. He really cares! I should know, having had 5 boys play for him. The O'Briens are very grateful that Dave has always been there every winter to roll out the basketballs. We wish Dave the very best!

Diane and Jeff Lyons

It has been an absolute privilege to call Dave Sullivan a friend for the last 35 years. His unwavering loyalty and rock-solid dedication to his family and friends is unmatched in my experience. Seeing that so many people have been influenced by Dave through 30 years of coaching is heart warming, but don't forget that Dave is sill a young man, relatively. With a lot more to do and more people to positively influence. And to harp on something I've asked Dave numerous times since the mid seventies; why not a run for mayor of Fairfield? Who seconds that?

All the best to you, Beth, Lindsey and Jake.

Bill, Karen and Ryan Hatton

Dear Dave,

Came to know Coach Sullivan after your legendary status had already been established, and soon came to know why. My lasting impression of your coaching that team in 2004 was how you took a group with varying abilities and made them a real "team", giving them each an identity of their own and a role they could excel in. You managed playing time, egos and parental expectations so well that each kid thought that he was the star of the team. That's a magician, disguised as a coach. Ryan had such a blast on that team and learned what a class act was. Thanks for all your efforts.

Bill, Karen and Ryan Hatton

Regina Berardino

Congratulations Dave on 30 wonderful years of coaching at St. Thomas! Long before I had a son on the basketball team I had heard of you from Peggy Flaherty. I knew you were special and that my son had something to look forward to having you as a coach. You certainly lived up to all our expectations. Not only did you solidly teach the fundamentals of a great game, you added lessons on sportsmanship, respect and faith. I was thrilled to learn that you said the Hail Mary at the start of each game. You are a class act and a wonderful role model. You taught each team member, not just the stars and encouraged each young man to do his personal best. Each young man from Justin and Jake's team who tried out for their high school team freshman year made the team. That is no accident...they took your instructions to heart and that made each of them real players. It is our privilege to know you as a coach and a friend. We wish you health and happiness Dave! Be assured of our continued prayers.

Congratulations Dave! Love, Regina Berardino

Joan and Jim Driggs

Dear Dave,

Thank you so much for three of the greatest years of our lives. Watching all of the boys play under your wonderful coaching was sheer pleasure. While the number of games could be exhausting (I remember 3 in one day in 3 different locations), the thrill of it all was exhilarating. But your coaching went far beyond the finer points of the game. Through your example and dedication, your team learned more than just basketball. You instilled in them a sense of sportsmanship and fair play that stayed with them both on and off the court and continues to be a part of their lives today. All of your boys from those three years have gone on to be successful in their endeavors - an attorney, two decorated war heroes, a college basketball coach, and several successful businessmen, just to name a few.

Thank you again for all that you did for St. Thomas Aquinas and the lucky boys who had the chance to play for you. God bless you.

Jim Bernstein (played for Dave's 1st Team 1980-1984)

Dear Dave,

I’m really amazed that you have been coaching St. Thomas basketball for 30 years. Tremendous milestone! I’m extremely lucky and fortunate to have been taught the fundamentals of the game by one of the best. I have had many coaches and you are definitely one of the greatest. The techniques you taught; play every play 100%, cover your man like a blanket, court vision and mental toughness. I feel this was the foundation for me to play in High School, then switched the game (Lacrosse) achieve HS All- American and propel me to College and play in the NCAA’s Division 1 levels, I thank you. Your passion is contagious and words are genuine.

I can remember like yesterday the practices, games and tournaments. The full court presses, in bounds plays and running of offenses. Passing the ball to downtown or hitting killer in the middle. “Swing it to Kelley”, you would say from the sidelines. You picked me up one time in the blue Nissan 280z after a Pop Warner football game and we went off to a tournament at the Shehan Center. Some great memories,,,

One story has resonated with me over the years and is a true classic:

It’s an away game at the Shehan Center. In the locker room you mention to me that the referees might stop the game and give out an award, so I’m like OK, thanks for the heads up. Now, the teams are out on their respective benches, warms ups are done and the tipoff is near. The two head coaches are at half court with the referees. I notice that the refs and the Shehan head coach are doing much of the talking and they are have a conversation about how they are going to stop the game when Chris Smith scores his 10,000 career point. They’ll award him with a golden basketball, have the Connecticut take a few photo’s, etc.

After listening to what these three individuals had to say you answer; “What if he doesn’t?” I can still picture the reactions on the faces of the three,,, I know you had them thinking,,, What if…. Dave this was priceless!

Sully,

You have not only been a coach but a friend and family friend. My wife Jennifer and I are glad you and Beth made our Wedding day celebration. I wish you and yours the very best!

“Preparation breeds confidence, Confidence wins Games…” Dave Sullivan.

Jeff and I have three daughters—and none of them were fortunate enough to play for Dave Sullivan. When my girls started playing basketball and we became more aware of the girls’ and boys’ programs at St. Thomas—it was always interesting year to year to see who the coaches would be of each team. The Boys Varsity coach was always Dave Sullivan. I don’t remember at the time if Dave was married to Beth—but this message is for Beth, Lindsey and Jake—as well as Dave.

Because I know what it is like to be married to a grammar school basketball coach.

First, you have the phone numbers of EVERY coach (Catholic/public school, PAL teams, boys/girls club), assistant coach, referee and school district in Fairfield and New Haven counties. Why? Because you are always looking for ‘extra’ games, scrimmages, practices and you need opponents, gyms and refs!

Second, you have an ‘extra’ supply of pinnies, balls, clip boards, first aid kits—because you have collected them over the years and you NEED them.

Third, you have the school calendar in your head. You cannot have games and/or practices or scrimmages scheduled for Halloween; the Christmas Show; Confirmation (and its practices!); the IOWA’s; or any night before Sister Margaret’s, Mrs. Stone’s, Mrs. Faust’s or Mrs. Martinsky’s tests!

Fourth, in addition to one or most likely, TWO practices a week, there were also the ‘games I have to scout’ or the ‘plays I have to work out’ or the ‘phone calls from parents’ that you have to deal with.

To be a good coach—and Dave, you certainly are—is not something you do for an hour or two each week--because you also worry about your ‘kids’. Are they doing well in school? Do they need any extra help? What’s going on at home? Do they have single parents—can I help with the rides to games, scrimmages, etc? Is it too much? Is it too little?

Coaching can consume your life—and considering all the years that Dave has given to St. Thomas with and without his children in the program---it is a testament to his dedication and the support and help of his family.

Beth, Lindsey and Jake—thanks for making Dave Sullivan Basketball both a tradition and an honor at St. Thomas.

Mary Jo and Jeff Dunne

Dan Flaherty (1989 - 1993 including that 44-0 team)

Dave,

I can't begin to tell you how much you have meant to the St. Thomas community in the last 30 years. I can remember running the 3 man weave at sherman school or doing ballhanding drills in an empty parking lot like it was yesterday, long before the new gym was built! Those are some of my fondest memories from St. Thomas and they were all made possible by you and your dedication to the school The program and all the wonderful opportunities it has brought to the school would not have been possible without your dedication throughout the years!

You truly are a class act, an inspiration and the face of St. Thomas basketball!! We cannot thank you enough as we have been blessed by your years of service!

Thank you

Dan Flaherty

Congrats to Dave on such a wonderful accomplishment! It is an honor to share this special celebration with you. In addition to teaching & coaching a well played basketball game, you gave a piece of your heart to each & every player. You instilled values & sportsmanship beyond the court. Each team member was privileged to have the opportunity to be a part of "Sully's team". We are so proud of all you are and all you do for so many of us!

With love and pride from your family (your 1st fan club!),

Dave,

Switch B.

I don’t know if it’s my favorite Dave Sullivan play or I just like the name. I do know that it brings a smile to my face just thinking about yelling that from the sideline or telling teams (boys and girls) in the locker room that we will run it against full court man.

Drift, sail, lock, blue, green … I could go on and on… St Thomas basketball- Dave Sullivan.

I remember as our oldest, Patrick, was moving from 6th to 7th grade a parent asked me why a guy without a child on the team was coaching the varsity. I didn’t know you well then but I simply responded “because he’s the coach”. That year I was your assistant and it was the start of a basketball and personal relationship that I truly cherish.

I can remember discovering the answer to the parents question fairly quickly. Observing your dedication, drive, patience and passion told it all. You have taken hundreds of boys ready to move past grammar school and given them a life lesson in your special way.

We are all grateful to have the good fortune to have you in our lives.

Wish you nothing but the best,

Jim and Jeanne

Kirkman, Bocce Teammate

Dear Sully,

Not only have you been a phenomenal basketball coach to so many, many young athletes over your 30 year coaching career but you have been a phenomenal bocce coach and captain as well.

In 2009, the Blue Marlins won their first ever First Place Championship in the Fairfield Bocce League. It wouldn't have been possible without your leadership, diligence and bombs! You are the glue that holds us together as we go for our next championship season...

Kirkman

Bob Donahue (played on Dave’s first team 1980-83)

Dave,

What’s hard to believe is that it’s been 30 years since you first pulled up to the parking lot of Osborn Hill school in your green Dodge Dart and introduced yourself as the new coach of St. Thomas basketball. What’s not hard to believe, however, is that after all these years so many former players, parents, fellow coach’s and friends have come together to honor you for your passionate coaching, tireless dedication, prudent guidance and loyal friendship.

In between then and now there have been many great memories, both on the court and off: the practices in the dark at Christ the King, the year end team dinners at Luigi’s, the rides home from practice you would give us whenever we asked (even though our parents could have easily picked us up), the trips we would make before school to see you at Sherman Green Deli to get a doughnut or hot chocolate (on the house!), and, of course, the games.

Back in the early days, there were more losses than wins. Regardless of the final score, however, you always taught us to play the game the right way, respect our opponent (except #6 from St. Mary’s – he was “bush”), and above all else, have fun. I never played organized basketball after St. Thomas and I never felt like I missed out on anything because I knew no other team experience could compare to the three years I played for you. Now, as my own kids begin to play organized sports, I teach them some of the lessons you taught us, and I hope that someday they will be fortunate enough to play for their own Dave.

A lot has changed in the past 30 years. It’s great to know that the one constant over that time has been your presence on the sidelines for St. Thomas. Congratulations Dave – and thank you! To quote Neil Young, “long may you run….”

Best always,

Bob Donahue

Greg Moye (Played for Dave 2000-2002)

Hi Coach,

Congratulations on 30 great seasons of basketball! I learned so much during the two years that I spent on your team, and I really wanted to let you know how much I appreciate everything you did for me. You taught me how far a little hard work and discipline can go, and that lesson goes far beyond the court. So thank you very much coach, congratulations and I look forward to seeing you soon.

All the best,

Greg Moye

Congratulations from Mark, Amy, Jack & Henry...

Dave/Uncle Dave,

Congratulations on your 30 years of outstanding coaching for St. Thomas' boys basketball! It was always enjoyable watching the disciplined and intense play of your teams under the guidance of you and your assistant coaches.

Also, thanks for continuing to teach Jack and Henry the fundamentals of the game and for helping Mark's Wakeman team implement some "college" plays. Our boys look forward to more basketball drills with you and Jake in the driveway and the gym.

CONGRATULATIONS and all the best,

Mark, Amy, Jack & Henry

Jim Driggs

I think its important to start by talking about Dave's legendary status. Dave is one of the few people in our world's history that is recognizable by one name. Like Madonna, Prince, Cher, Lebron, Kobe, and Michael...Like Ali, Obama, Bird, and Magic...There is Dave and only one Dave. Whether you are in the halls of St. Thomas, at Wakeman, The Sheehan Center, Oscars, or the Driftwood (RIP) the name Dave conjures up thoughts of a man who couldn't pass, dribble, or shoot; couldn't run, jump, or defend! A man who couldn't score 25 pts if he was the only one in the gym! A man who at the age of 28 would of come off the bench on our 1990-1991 team that went 44-0, and we were in 6th grade.

enough joking-

In all seriousness, I think if Dave were a word defined by Webster's one would see that it is synonymous with the word genuine. Genuine is the first word that comes to mind when I think of Dave. Mrs. Stone (I mean Webster's) defines genuine as something/someone that is authentic, real, free from pretense, free from hypocrisy; sincere. With the exception of one's parents it is hard for young people to truly comprehend the importance of people in ones life until they are much older. This was the case with Dave. As I look back on my years as a member of Dave's teams I am always reminded of a coach who truly cared for his players. His self-sacrifice and genuine interest in US made those years so enjoyable. Sports have the unique ability to form long lasting friendships. Dave was the catalyst for many of these relationships that still last today. Dave made basketball fun (it also helped that we won a ton of games too!) and he played an integral role in me truly falling in love with the game of basketball. I have been very fortunate to have basketball in my life and it has given me a lot. As I look back on my basketball journey I always smile when I know it all started with Dave on his teams at St. Thomas.

Dave, thank you for all that you have done for the school and the community. I have always considered you to be a mentor, a friend, and most importantly a coach! Your service has truly been remarkable. I hope to see you soon!!!

-Driggsy

Dear Dave,

We are so grateful our son had the good fortune to have been coached by you! Your genuine interest in seeing him develop not only as a team player but as a caring young man meant a great deal to him and to us. Over the past several years he always knew he could count on his #1 fan to be in the stands rooting for him whether it was at St. Thomas, Prep or Wakeman. So many, many thanks and congratulations on hitting an incredible milestone!
All the very best,

Greg Varga, Player on Dave’s First Team (1980-83)

Dave, it’s hard to believe that thirty seasons have passed since we first stepped on that old court in the gym of Osborne Hill School for our first practice with you and Skin. I have only the fondest memories of our time together. You managed to make each practice and game fun and interesting and were a tremendous role model. Though I was not the most gifted player (Kilbride, Donahue, Harding and Bernstein did pretty well, as I recall), I learned from you the importance of team—a lesson that has made a huge difference in my life. Someone once said that a good coach makes his players see what they can be, rather than what they are. You certainly did that for all of us, in athletics and in life. So on this happy occasion, I want to thank you for all you’ve done for me and for the hundreds of other guys who had the good fortune to be coached by you in the past three decades.

Congratulations, coach, and best wishes for health and happiness in the years ahead.

The Sacco Family

Dave, thank you for your many years of dedication and selfless service to the St. Thomas basketball program. Over the years, the players, coaches, and administration change; but for the past thirty years you have been the singular consistent and positive image of St. Thomas basketball!

With gratitude, Brian, Renee, Kevin, Danny, and Allison

Jimmy Dowd, 2005-2006

As a coach, your job is to not only to teach your players about the game of basketball, but to also teach your players about life as well. Coach Dave, you have gone beyond this obligation and you have taught us all how to become men. As a player, I knew how to play to a great level of intensity, but you also taught me to play with heart as well. Your guidance as a coach allowed me to become a better player, whether it was a win or a loss. Yet, you always had the positive attitude that pushed us all along to win. You watched me play from 5th grade all the way to high school and your presence made me remember what I could become. Your faith in me pushed me further than I could imagine and the lessons I learned on and off the court is a true testament to your great coaching ability. Your legacy as a coach at St. Thomas will never be forgotten and the mark you left on me as a great coach will never leave me because without you, Coach Dave, I would have never became the person I am today. God bless you, Coach Dave, you truly are the greatest.

How fortunate for the boys of St. Thomas Aquinas School to have had the opportunity of being part of your long and successful coaching expertise for so many years! Hey Coach - thanks for a great two years. I learned a lot about basketball but more about what it means to be a good team player and a better person. It was great playing for you and I can still run Blue in my sleep! When it comes time in the future that I have kids and they are playing basketball they will be lucky to have a coach half as good as you.

Thanks for everything Coach.

Dave,

I thoroughly enjoyed coaching with you. You were in it for the right reason - to teach the kids, build their confidence, and help them build esteem. They never doubted that you cared about them. What was nice is you loved to win but new how to be a gracious loser when called upon. You made a big impact on countless lives. Well done - what a great example for all of us.

Best to you-

Tony Guzzi

Jake Pesci (2007-2008 Team)

Dear Coach Sullivan,

Thank you so much for your outstanding coaching. I learned a lot from you, about both the game and life. You've made me and all of your players better people. I had so much fun playing for you. Your coaching led us all the way to New England's, and that is incredible. I never thought that I could have learned so much from a single person. Best wishes to you and your family. You are a great coach.

Thank You for Two Great Seasons,
Jake Pesci

Justin Berardino, 2007-2008 Team

Coach Sullivan,

Thank you for all the time you put in during our 8th grade season. I will always remember how much fun we had both on the court and off the court on our way to the New England tournament. Your passion for the game was always evident when you were coaching and when you played with us in practice. Congratulations on 30 years of coaching! I am happy to have had the opportunity to learn from you.

Sean Kilbride - Played on Dave's First Team(1980-1983)

Dave,

It seems like yesterday that we met in front of Osborne Hill school for our first practice. I was new to St. Thomas and had never played organized basketball before, so I was pretty nervous. Being the first one to arrive, you greeted me with a smile and asked me if everyone else was as tall as I was! Even as an eleven year old kid, you know when someone special has entered your life.

What followed were three fantastic years under the tutelage of Sully. I can never remember you raising your voice, yet you commanded our complete respect. You showed such an interest in us as young men, and your passion for the game was contagious. You were a skilled teacher and truly gifted as a master motivator....I have never, ever been so determined to win at anything in my life as I was during the St. Mary's game in eighth grade!

Thirty years later, I am honored to be writing this to you and so thankful to you for being my coach, mentor and friend. I am sure that you did not set out to create a legacy, but that is what you have done. You are our John Wooden, a coach for life.

Congratulations Coach!!

Sean

Dave's 2008 Yearbook Dedication... from Pam Toner

The "Papi" Play... story from Brian O'Toole

A few years back St. Thomas had a 6'1 player in the eighth grade named Alex Torre. Dave was ecstatic, finally having some height and designed a specific underneath the basket out of bounds play, that in his estimation was a guaranteed layup every time, and rightfully so..
Well, we had to come up with a name for the play.. since all the kids had nicknamed Alex, Papi so became the name of the play.
First game, St. Thomas has the ball under the basket, perfect time to utilize the big man so Dave yells out run "Papi".
The play starts and Alex runs out to the corner and sets himself up to shoot a three pointer.
Dave couldn't help but keep repeating, "I can't believe it I finally got a big kid, we name the play after him and he is in the corner looking for the ball to shoot a three." He went on and on about that, but you better believe all of the other times the play "Papi" was called it resulted in an easy layup.

Coach Brian O'Toole

Dave:

Sincere congratulations on 30 years of coaching. I have had the pleasure of coaching with you for many of your years. As a result we have developed a lasting friendship.

Being directly associated with you through coaching, I saw first hand the passion that you held for the game of basketball. You always brought a high level of energy and enthusiasm to each and every game and practice. You genuinely cared about each and every player that you coached or were associated with. No matter what the talent level was for any particular year you always brought the best out of the kids, and it showed in the results. Opponents always knew they had their hands full with a Dave Sullivan coached St. Thomas team. I watched first hand the respect that was shown to you by opposing coaches, referees and all associated with catholic grammar school basketball. I was always amazed at your memory, you could recall every detail from every game whether it was played the day before or five years earlier. St. Thomas is blessed by your dedication and effort and is fortunate to have a man of your character amongst them. While I have too many fond memories to share, I share in joining others to once again say thank you. While St. Thomas has many banners hanging in the gym from Dave Sullivan's teams, its not about the banners. You have directly impacted the lives of so many St. Thomas students in a positive way and it must be very fulfilling to see these students later on as successful adults and knowing that you had a positive impact on their lives.

You have set the bar very high for all associated with the St. Thomas Basketball Program.

All the Best my Friend

Pete Harding, Played for Dave's 1st Team (1980-1983)

Dave, it is hard to believe I could be writing this in honor of your 30 years of coaching at Saint Thomas. I can remember it like it was yesterday, meeting you and Skin, for the first time, outside of Osborne Hill school in October 1980. I was only in the sixth grade but knew we were in for something special almost immediately.

You have had more of an impact on my life then you will ever know and for that I will be forever grateful. You were the best coach I ever played for and I found myself referring to things you said and did often as I got older.

Two things I remember clearly were the Saint James game which was our last game of the 6th grade season and the Saint Mary's tournament in the 8th grade. I know we have laughed together about those stories and relived them many times over the years (and for sure they will be re-told on 6/4!). They will go down as two of the best games I was ever a part of. You knew how to inspire us and get us to play beyond our potential. I had coaches I liked to play for after Saint Thomas but never one who knew how to motivate quite like you.

Dave, thanks for being a great coach and friend over the years. You are one of a kind and my life has truly been blessed as a result of getting to know you.

You're the best,

Peter Harding

Kevin Greene, St. Mark Boys Varsity Basketball Coach

Dave, you and I have battled for a long time. I can honestly say we have brought out the best in each other. I knew I was in trouble when you had your handkerchief in your hand before the game even started. I knew then it was time to take off my suit jacket, roll up my sleeves and get to work! As well as being a fantastic coach, you are always a perfect gentleman. It has always been an honor to coach and play against your team and I look forward to doing it again. Congratulations on 30 years, and here is to many, many more!

Again, congratulations and God Bless!

Kevin Simmons, Referee and Executive Director of the Burroughs Community Center

Dave --- I have refereed an awful lot of diocesan basketball games over the last twenty years….almost as many as you have coached in the last 30 years perhaps.

When you walk in to a gym to ref a St Thomas game you are know you will get a well drilled, well coached and disciplined team. Talent is cyclical but the way that St Thomas runs their program is not – it is first class all the way and all the time. You are one of the main reasons for that and as someone who loves the game, I thank you for all you have done for St Thomas and so many players over the last three decades. It was always an honor to work a Dave Sullivan coached game.

Kevin Simmons

Kevin Cullinane, 2001 Team...

Coach Sullivan,

Thank you for all you have done for St. T's and its basketball program over the past few decades. You have dedicated countless hours and your players could not be more grateful.

Not a week goes by that I don't think about our run to the New England championship game in 2001 and its impact on my teammates and me. Some of my lacrosse teammates in college would joke that I was the only kid who cared enough to brag about middle school sports stories. I remember walking off the court thinking of how badly we wanted to win for you to pay you back for the time and effort you gave every day. Thanks for being a great coach, father, and mentor to us over the years.

See you soon Coach.

Terry O'Connor, Executive Director Cardinal Shehan Center

Congratulations Dave on your 30 years of coaching basketball.

From someone who has coached every level you can, it is my belief that you can have the greatest influence on the young
players you have on your teams.

They are in their formative years and your advice, counsel, discipline and love can go a long way in shaping their futures.

You also get to see many of them grow up before your very eyes and become productive citizens.

The memories you create as a team last a lifetime both in losing that close game to winning the Championship.

Sorry I will be away on vacation and miss your special night but my thoughts will be with you as you celebrate all the kids, the games and the memories.

John Wooden once said, "You cannot live a perfect day without doing something for someone who will never be able to repay you."

Coaches do this all the time!!!!!

Yours in coaching

Terry O'Connor
